The Joby 3-Way Camera Strap is the transformer of camera straps, as it is a wrist, shoulder and neck strap all in one. The small base that connects to your camera’s tripod mounting screw has a metal internal spooling mechanism that allows for quick extension and retraction of the durable & strong Dyneema cord. There is a lock that allows you to adjust the length of the strap anywhere between the max and min sizing. With these features and the really light and comfortable padded strap piece the Joby 3-Way Camera Strap is a winner.
I normally use this strap in wrist strap mode. The key for me is that it is quick and easy to put on and take off the camera, and allows me to shoot in awkward positions without worrying about dropping the camera, as I know it is secure around my wrist. I have been known to hang out of moving vehicles in order to get unique angles of vehicles in action. The Joby 3-Way Camera Strap allows me to get into those positions without any restriction and know that my camera is secure. The side benefit is that if all else fails I can also “drop the camera” and use both my hands to save myself from certain doom without worrying about the camera leaving my person, exponentially making it more likely that the camera will survive the incident.
While Joby advises that you periodically check the tightness of the thumbscrew that attaches the unit to the camera, I have not found that it loosens much at all. The rubber pad seems to secure the unit nicely with just the thumbscrew being hand tightened to the camera. Joby recommends that you mount the strap to the camera sideways, with the red wrist strap tightener towards the right, although in their product photos and demonstration videos they show it mounted both sideways and inline with the lens. I can’t seem to find a good reason to mount it sideways, except maybe if you have exceptionally large hands or wrists when using the strap in wrist strap mode. I have always used this strap with the red wrist strap tightener towards the back of the camera. This allows the camera to hang evenly when the strap is used over the shoulder or around the neck, and also gives a slightly tighter fit when in wrist strap mode.
I pretty much always have my camera, currently a Nikon D600 attached to either this Joby 3-Way Camera Strap, the PacSafe CarrySafe 150 Camera Sling Strap or the Joby GorillaPod Focus + Ballhead X. On occasion the camera ends up on a tripod or the SteadePod as well, but those occasions are rare as I like to shoot action and travel photography the most. In the end it really comes down to me always being on the move and wanting my camera super handy to get the shot. The combination of these three great products really allow me to cover nearly all my camera carrying and stabilizing needs without carrying around much bulk or weight.
