The Leatherman Skeletool CX is a badass tool that has all the right stuff to be your go to everyday pocket tool. I’m not one to carry much on me and I now carry this little guy on almost all my adventures. I had it, and used it a ton, during the entire Maya Rally adventure this past December. Anthony Sicola, my rally team-mate, even used his to cut a seatbelt while extracting the driver from a car crash. Talk about handy! Don’t leave home without your Skeletool CX.
All the essentials: bottle opener, pliers, wire cutters, screwdriver w/bits and knife blade. What more do your really need?
The external blade is super convenient and seems to hold an edge well.
The spring-loaded wire gate is great for keeping the tool in your pocket or on your pack, and doubles as a bottle opener:)

Old faithful. I’ve had this original Leatherman since my early years in Boy Scouts, and I still carry it today in my Sportsmobile.
Leatherman Factory Tour (Oct. 10, 2012)
I got the chance to visit the 120,000 sf Leatherman factory in Portland, Oregon late last year. It is an impressive facility and I highly recommend scheduling a tour next time you make it to Portland. The facility makes 20+ different tools and runs for 5-6 days a week 24 hrs a day. Huge die presses make many of the parts in-house while cast parts, like pliers, are contracted out. The Portland plant makes all of Leatherman’s products in-house, and the only parts made outside the Portland area are the cases, which are made overseas. Leatherman is a privately owned company and is proud to be made in Oregon.
Sorry for no pics from inside the factory, but they strictly enforce their no photography rule on the tour. You’ll just have to go check out it out for yourself 🙂
Hot Tip: Leatherman will do custom engraving on any of their tools. There is an $80 setup fee for custom stuff, but if you just want your name engraved it only costs $5!
