I had the privilege of attending the launch of the next generation Corvette. It was an impressive event for a truly next level American sports car. The Corvette is now a vehicle that I could see owning one day.
You can read my in-depth thoughts on the new 2020 C8 Corvette Stingray in the story I wrote for Gear Junkie HERE.
I thought I’d sum it up for you here, and share a few more photos from the event with you as well.
The 2020 Corvette Stingray is a mid-engine sports car masterpiece! It looks very much like a Corvette in person, where online many have said it looks like a variety of V8 Ferrari or the new Acura NSX. I assure you this car is unique and very much a traditional American sports car, which means it is a V8 powered rear-wheel-drive high horsepower monster. This car has just taken it a step further with the balance of a mid-engine layout and a refined interior.
I’d personally buy it in white with the blue interior option. Not a color selection I thought I’d ever say, but the combo is truly stunning on this car. The suede steering wheel and competition seats would also be on my list. Required for me would be the Z51 performance package, with performance exhaust.
The 2020 Stingray has also left a lot on the table in terms of upgrades that we all know are coming. Will it get a supercharger or twin turbos? Not sure, but I can assure you it will happen pretty soon. I want to see it with an electric motor in the frunk and AWD. That setup would take this car to astonishing levels of performance that the competition would be hard pressed to touch.
The starting price of the 2020 Corvette is under $60,000. That is an astonishing value for a refined mid-engine sport car with a double-clutch-transmission. This is especially true when you figure that the car will be able to sprint from a stand still to 60 MPH in under 3 seconds.
Sure you’ll probably want to spec the car in such a way that nearly everyone sold will be over $80,000. While not inexpensive, that is still a fraction of the price of any real competitor.
What do you think of the new C8? I think there’s lots to like, and it will appeal to a much wider audience than any Corvette in history. It does however have a number of areas where it can be improved upon.
